Here are the Young, Fresh & New notes & thoughts regarding the 2009 BET Award. I must say that there was a lot of misses than hits last night.

1. Where was Chris Brown? There was word that he was schedule to perform but didn’t because of Jay-Z. One of Chris Brown’s dancer @bshaw721 tweeted about Jay-z did not want Chris Brown to perofrm at the awards. I can understand that Jay-z is not a fan of  Chris Brown after the whole Rihanna incident, but Chris Brown had every right to be there and the perform at the awards. I wonder what the people at BET told Chris Brown and his camp. Also, Jay-z did not need to perform since his video was being premiered last night. Jayz is more important than Chris Brown.

2. Kanye West was scheduled to perform but he didn’t last night. It sounds a little strange to me since Kanye West is known for ranting and raving about not getting enough showtime on television. Kanye didn’t go on a rampage which shows that he is really working on his “ego” I’m not a huge fan of Soulja Boy but that performance was the worst I have seen in years. Singing or rapping over your tracks should not be allowed at an awards. PERIOD! Kanye West > Soulja Boy.

3. Host Jamie Foxx got the most plugins I have ever seen in my life at an award show. Every two seconds he was plugging in that he is on tour next month. Not to mention that he performed three times during the award show and won an award for Best Collaboration with T-Pain. Sounds like a fix plan to me. Since its a recession, the plugins at the awards is BET’s way of compensating him and it worked.

4. Did anyone notice Diddy’s face when BBD was performing? I guess there is still some bitter blood. Stop holding a grudge and move on!

5. Young Money, Drake & Lil Wayne performance looks like a last minute deal. I can’t recall if Lil Wayne was schedule to perform but overall it was good but not CRAZY! Also, having underage girls singing “Every Girl” on stage was not a good look. You are screaming R. Kelly! But one thing I can say is that I am truly happy to see Toronto’s own Drake on stage at the BET awards. It’s the beginning of an era for him and I am so happy to witness that!

6. CNN was granted a red carpet interview wit hJoe Jackson regarding his son Michael Jackson. Did anyone notice how Joe Jackson plugged in his recording company during his red carpet interview. I found that to be a little strange. Overall, he is handling this situation very well and is very concern to what was going on with Michael Jackson – Rest in Peace.

7. Taraji P. Henson, Tyrese & Ving Rhimes skit was uber gay. I felt that they didn’t need to plug that in there. I guess it’s BET’s way of trying to be funny. NOT!

8. I believe that BET was trying to bank in on Michael Jackson’s death by paying a tribute. BET has been mentioning it all weekend that the awards will be doing many tributes to MJ all night. With only three days to change some of the plans, I felt they should of done more. They shouldn’t have allowed Jay-z to influence their decision about Chris Brown. I am sure more will unfold during the upcoming days and weeks.

9. What happened to Usher? Word that he was trying to catch a flight to be at the awards. I wonder what happened.

10. And we will never know what the awards was suppose to look like prior to Michael Jackson’s death.

11. The biggest highlight was when Janet Jackson paid a homage to her brother. You could look into her eyes and see the emotions from within. Her message was short and sweet.

Side note: I was tweeting with my homies – @bennybing & @heyhomee and they mentioned that Debra Lee needs a performance review. I agree with that statement. It’s the BET’s ninth annual awards and they still don’t have everything in order. When is BET going to step up! The whole world was watching BET last night because of the Michael Jackson tribute and there wasn’t much that was done. I will be waiting for all the other awards shows – Billboard, American Music Awards, MTV Vmas and of course the Grammys. They will do a BETTER tribute.

Last night (Sunday June 27th, 2009), BET held their ninth annual awards ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. Many singers, rappers, actors, athletes among many others attended the awards. Following the death of Michael Jackson (1958 – 2009), BET recognized and acknowledged to the public that they would be having a tribute him all night. The awards kicked off with the 106 & Park – Red Carpet special featuring various performances by The New Boyz, Letoya Luckett, Jeremih, Day 26 and many others. Throughout the course of the red carpet, Rocsi and Terrence asked Marlon Wayans – which artist(s) he is excited to see perform? He responded with New Edition which completely spoiled the surprise. (SURPRISE!?!?!)

The awards opened with New Edition including Johnny Gill did a bunch of Jackson 5 medley including “ABC,” “I Want You Back,” and “Stop The Loving”. Instantly the crowd and the viewers at home were anxious and amped about what BET had in store at the awards.

The Host Jamie Foxx came out in a classic Michael Jackson outfit – red jacket, black pants, glitter gloves and white socks. He did a little “Beat It” dance tribute. As usual he kept the crowd entertain with making various jokes and talking about his experience in 1984 when he saw Michael Jackson in concert. As a tribute in MJ honour, Jamie Foxx moonwalked from one side of the stage to the other. It sure wasn’t as easy as it looked.

Through out the course of the night, many artists paid their tribute to Michael Jackson with various performances including Ciara, Ne-Yo, and Jamie Foxx.  The awards was more of a performance based similar to what MTV VMAs have been doing for the past few years.

Beyonce took home two awards for Video of the Year (Single Ladies) and Best Female R&B Artist.

The O’Jays were honoured last night with a performance from Tevin Campbell followed by Tyrese, Johnny Gill and Trey Songz. I must say that Don Cornelius kept us bored with his super slow speeches and his monotone. The O’Jays performed their classic hits “Use To Be My Girl,” and “For the Love of M0ney”.

Also, Alicia Keys and Wycelf Jean were honoured for their humanitarian efforts across the world.

Maxwell performed his first single “Pretty Wings” off his upcoming album Blacksummers’nights

Drake, Young Money and  Lil Wayne performed which looked like a last minute performance.

In closing, Janet Jackson came out to say a few words saying about her brother Michael Jackson. “To you, Michael was an icon. To us, Michael is family”. (Video Below) Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo performed “I’ll Be There” as the closing performance,

Sunday June 21, was the 2009 MuchMusic Video Awards held in Toronto. Many celebrities, artists, athletes including Perez Hilton, Jonas Brothers, Chris Bosh, Audrina from The Hills and Drake came out to support the awards. Danny Fernandes, Classified, Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga were some of last night’s winners.

As much as I didn’t really care for the awards presentation, the performances are always a good highlight. Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas and Classified were some of the artists that performed. Lady Gaga blew me away with her high energy, ultra charismatic performance. I firmly believe she is BETTER artist than Britney Spears. Today, Terrence J & Rosci announced the nominees for the 2009 BET Awards on 106 & Park. The 2009 BET Awards will be live at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday June 28th 8 EST/7 Central and will be hosted by comedian/actor/singer-songwriter Jamie Foxx. Confirmed performances by Jamie Foxx, Beyonce, Maxwell, Ne-Yo and more to follow.

Lil Wayne, Beyonce and T.I. lead with five nominations each followed by Kanye West, Rihanna, Jamie Foxx and Jazmine Sullivan who each got four nominations.

One thing I did notice that Chris Brown did not receive any nomination. I guess BET doesn’t support or associate themselves with him or maybe his songs are not good enough to be nominated.

Saturday October 18th BET held the 2008 Hip Hop Awards at Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center in Atlanta. Many of Hip Hop major artists were there including Lil Wayne, Salt-N-Pepa, T.I., Nelly, LL Cool J and many more. The event seems like it was successful one and there was no drama!! (Or atleast I think so). I would advise not to expect the unexpected. It’s BET People!! To read all the nominations and my thoughts – click here. By the way, You know Lil Wayne is nominated for 12 out of 16 awards and you know he is going to take most of them. What kind of award is that? That’s BET for you!! Lil Wayne had an awesome year but 12 nomination out of 16 is a little drastic.

10:02 – Tracy Morgan is kinda whack to me. Why is he trying to the a political Hip Hop Campaign. As he is on his campaign bus, he is working on his speech.

10:04 – Tracy Morgan finally makes it on stage and you see all these Hip Hop Banner with this years honorees. Considering that they are latinos, they paved the way for other latino and broke into the scene with their first single “How Could I Just Kill A Man”. Interesting Fact – they broke two turntables every night?!?! Those things are not cheap.

10:12 – Gym Class Heroes, Mack 10, Jim Jones and Fat Joe all performing Cypress Hill classics? This should be interesting.

10:12 – Fat Joe  performs “The Phuncky Feel One”. What the hell is Fat Joe wearing? Your a big dude and that shirt does not help. Good performance tho.

10:13 – Jim Jones performs “I Ain’t Going Out Like That”. Dope track but why Jim Jones performing? They couldn’t get someone else. B

10:14 – Travis McCoy performs “Insane in the Brain” with Mack 10. I haven’t seen this Mack 10 in a minute. This is one dope track.

10:15 – Cypress Hills performs “How Could I Just Kill A Man”. Interesting Fact – this was their first single!! Wow how can you start the industry with a song like that?

10:17 – Cypress Hills performs “Rock Superstar”. This song has a a lot of energy when performed live. Damnnn.

10:24 – Next Up – De La Soul

10:26 – De La Soul mentioned they never wrote together as a group. Dave and Maseo would go separate ways to write the songs and would put it together after. That’s a rare and very interesting technique.

10:27 – Joy Bryant talks about the time she fell in love De La Soul and reminisces when she bought the vinyl of 3 Feet High Is Rising. Q-Tip, Estelle, Cee-lo, Mos Def, EPMD and Public Enemy will perform De La Soul singles!!

10:49 – Slick Rick talks about the art of story-telling through hip hop. Growing up in England, he developed the vision for “The Ruler” from the Queen and her royal family. In 1985, he met Doug E. Fresh, where they later created “La Di Da Di” and the B Side “The Show”. It’s 2008, there aren’t a lot of story tellers. We need more in hip hop!

Overall the Awards were dull. Tracy Morgan did a horrible job at hosting the awards. He definitely know his Hip Hop but his jokes were whack! Last year’s awards was highly entertaining and I just hope next year they can step up their game. I wonder who will be honored next year. Check back for the performances from the awards

Yesterday BET announced all the nominees for the 2008 Hip Hop Awards. Lil’ Wayne lead with 12 nominations. He received nominations for Best Lyricist, MVP of the year, Best Video (Lollipop) and others. Hmm who wouldn’t of guessed that. I mean he had a great year but 12 is a little drastic for me considering there is only 16 awards to be given away. Of course, BET never gets it right but you can’t knock their hustle for trying. Followed by Lil’ Wayne is Roc-A-Fella’s own Kanye West with seven nominations and Jay-Z with six. Others major nominees include T.I., Plies DJ Khaled, and Flo Rida.

The awards will be aired on October 23rd  at 8PM (EST) and hosted by comedian Katt Williams who also hosted the awards last year. This year I Am Hip Hop Icon will go to the founder of Def Jam records Russell Simmons for his major contribution to Hip Hop. Be sure to check back to see who will be presenting and performing. I am pretty sure Lil’ Wayne, T.I. and Kanye West will be performing. But who knows – it’s just a thought.

I have evaluated the awards and its nominees, I am not impressed with any of it. Here are some of my observations:

• Producer of the Year: Why is Bangladesh being nominated? He only produced one HIT track – Lil’ Wayne “A Milli”. Where is Just Blaze, Swizz Beatz, or Polow Da Don? Whack!!!
• Best Hip Hop Video: David Banner “Get Like Me” is being nominated as the Best Hip Hop Video of the year? Are you kidding me? Where is the Jay-z “Roc Boys” Video? or Nas’ “Hero” or Lupe Fiasco “Paris, Toyko”? We have options people!!
• CD of the Year? 50 Cent didn’t make the list? Hmm I wonder.
• Hustler of the Year? Diddy? Don’t get me wrong, Diddy definitely has his money right but what has he done for hip hop in the last year? Making the Band doesn’t count.
• Yung Berg? Why are you being nominated for Ringtone of the Year and People’s Champ? Are you telling me we don’t have any other artists to nominate? Once again, whack!
• Last but not least, – Best U.K. Hip Hop Act: When did BET start caring about what goes on outside the U.S.? I am happy that they have included artists from U.K but what about Canada? We got Kardinal Offishall, Drake, JD Era, Page, Frankie Payne, TheKidFamous, Bishop, Rochester and many more. So if BET is going to do a U.K. category, they should also do one for Canada. I watched BET occasionally and not once have I seen an artist from the U.K. – so why is there an award? What gives the U.K. leverage over Canada? Someone please explain THIS to me!
